What are Cookies

Cookies are small text strings that sites visited by the user send to the user’s terminal (usually to the browser) and to the user’s computer, smartphone or other device, each time a website or social network is visited, to be then re-transmitted to the same sites the next time the same user visits.

There are different types of cookies:

  • temporary (session cookies): these are deleted at the end of the “session” when the browser is closed and are stored on the user’s computer for purely technical-functional needs, including the transmission of session identifiers necessary to enable the safe and efficient exploration of the site,
  • permanent (persistent cookies): they remain stored on the computer’s hard drive until they expire or are deleted by users/visitors. They fulfill many functionalities in the interest of surfers, such as for example the use of the navigation language or the registration of the shopping cart in online purchases..

Cookies can be divided into two macro-categories according to the type of use:

  • technical cookies that are used for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. These are, in other words, cookies that are indispensable for the operation of the site or necessary to perform activities requested by the user,
  • profiling cookies that are aimed at creating profiles related to the user and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the same in the context of web browsing.

The following types fall into the category of technical cookies:

  • navigation or session cookies,
  • functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, the use of the navigation language or the registration of the shopping cart) in order to improve the service rendered to the same,
  • “analytics” cookies used directly by the site operator to collect statistics, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site.

There are also “third-party cookies“, i.e. cookies from sites or web servers other than that of the Owner, used for purposes specific to said third parties, including profiling cookies. These third parties are autonomous controllers of the data collected through the cookies they serve; therefore, the user must refer to their personal data processing policies, disclosures and consent forms (selection and de-selection of the respective cookies).
